Even though individual game tickets are not being sold yet, the FIFA is already offering different packages where you can choose to follow your preferred team or by venue. There are plenty of options to enjoy this world cup.

Dress code

Females don’t need to wear a hijab or abaya (full length black cloak), they do need to dress modesty while covering shoulders and knees. You can try to get yourself a couple of pashminas too so you can cover your shoulders when wearing any strappy tops. As for the male dress code, it’s respectful to wear shorts that come just below the knee or some lightweight pants so you don’t get too hot.

Prohibitions in public

It is against the law to drink alcohol or carry alcohol in public. But you can purchase it at a licensed hotel restaurant or at a bar. Showing public displays of affection are an offence and can lead to arrest. PDA that you should avoid includes kissing, cuddling and even holding hands in some places.

There is zero tolerance for drugs-related offences. The penalties for the use of, trafficking, smuggling and possession of drugs (even residual amounts) are severe and can include lengthy custodial sentences, heavy fines and deportation.

Taking photographs or filming people, religious or constriction sites in a new destination is a common practice among tourists. Hence, you have to be very careful practicing this in sensitive or prohibited places. If in doubt, seek permission.

Currency

Since 1967, Qatari Riyals is the official currency of the State of Qatar. Credit and debit cards are mostly accepted at larger stores but, smaller or stand-alone local stores generally use cash, particularly in the Souqs.

Weather

The FIFA World Cup will be held between 21st November to 18th December. Since that’s a transitional weather time, it can be warm but tolerable. During this period, the temperature varies between 19°C and 25°C. Lightweight cotton and linen is the most recommended and will also help you with the dress code.

Visa

There are many countries who can obtain a visa waiver on arrival at the airport, the only things you will need are: a valid passport with a minimum validity of 6 months and a confirmed onward or return ticket. The maximum allowed length of stay will depend on your citizenship and can be either 30 or 90 days. In case that you need to apply for a visa, you will need a valid passport and the travel information including airline, dates and flight number.
