A conflict that is exploding now, but it has way history. The Russia Ukraine tension has more than one government following their steps very closely. With the recent Russian attack, NATO has gotten more involved and its members are trying to speak down to Russia’s President Vladimir Putin, with no success so far.

What is the back history between Russia and Ukraine?

After the dissolvement of the Soviet Union in 1991, Ukraine came into possession of a significant number of nuclear weapons that were the property of the by then nonexistent Soviet Union. More recent tensions came in 2014 when in February, protesters in Ukraine overthrow Viktor Yanukovych, who was president of Ukraine at the moment and was friendly to Russia’s interests. Between this and the new presidential election, Russia invaded Ukraine and annexes the peninsula of Crimea. Later, this war continued, and Russia helped Donetsk and Luhansk to “technically separate” from Ukraine, and President Putin recognized both cities as independent republics. To stop this war; Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and France signed the Minsk Accords, a series of cease-fire agreements.

Russia and Ukraine’s current issues

Not long ago, in 2019, when the current president of Ukraine was elected, some tension came again with his promise to restore the Donbas, that is the Donetsk and Luhansk area. After this situation, Russia sent troops to the border with Ukraine, allegedly it was just for military training and not for an invasion.

Lately, the United States, with Biden’s government has been helping Ukraine and kind of protected them from Russia. But last year, 2021, missiles, arms, and nuclear equipment were spotted entering Ukraine. It is known that the US has a military presence around Europe and in some countries has bases and armament as well like missiles.

In this way, this year, the Russian President was harder on his posture that Russia was feeling threatened under the last deployment of United States Army forces. And it is against Ukraine joining NATO, therefore, he said that it is neither of the countries intends to go into a war or conflict where several people could get hurt and cities damaged. But he is maintaining his posture on the US leaving Ukraine so that Russia wouldn’t feel forced to attack Ukraine.

Last update on this conflict

The last information there is regarding this, now an armed conflict is that Ukraine is under a state of emergency with the President’s imposition of martial law, and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine this Thursday, February 24, 2022. Ukraine’s borders are now closed, and residents of both countries are afraid of what could happen in the following days.

A war wouldn’t be something beneficial for any of the involved governments, and they should try to settle an agreement where Ukraine could choose member and ally of what side wants to be because since Russia’s objection on Ukraine to become a member of NATO is what technology has developed into this kind of war being held at the moment.
