The USA is the dream destination of many a traveller. With 50 states the size of countries and a landmass that’s bigger than most continents, the United States of America is deserving of many repeat visits.

But everyone has to start somewhere, and if you’re planning a trip to one of the iconic cities, landscapes or states of America, you’ll need to get to grips with their visa policy first. There’s a lot to explore, and every state has its own unique culture and character to dive into. That’s why it’s so important that visitors do not fall at the first hurdle, and make the necessary preparations for their visas.

This blog will explore the different types of visas available to visitors and which ones are right for your visit to the USA.

Why Do You Need  A Visa To Enter The USA?

A US visa application is common practice for any citizen of a foreign country wishing to travel for a period of time to USA. Visas help to regulate and control the flow of people travelling in and out of a country and provide authorities with the necessary information to contact you. This is especially important during the coronavirus pandemic when virus outbreaks can mean the difference between whole towns or cities being forced into lockdowns.

Tourist Visas

US Tourist visas - or B2 Visitor Visas - are designed for use for tourist activities in the USA. this means anyone visiting family or wishing to travel across the country on a holiday must apply for this visa so as to guarantee entry into the country. When using this visa, you must be travelling solely for leisure rather than for business purposes.

Business Visas

Business visas are designed for visitors who are planning on visiting the USA for business or to attend an event linked to the business. Extra measures will have to be placed on your application for this visa, including proof of your reason for travel and the destinations you plan on visiting during your stay.

Visa Validity

Tourist and business visas are usable for a maximum of one between one and ten years from their start date. The use by date depends on the length of visa you opt for. These visas allow travellers to stay in the country for a maximum of 6 months, but once you are in the country, you may apply for an extension. It’s recommended that you apply for your visa between 2 and 3 months prior to planned date of travel, allowing you as much time as possible to run through the application process.

Required Documents

US visas require a number of different documents. First off, you’ll need a passport with at least a 6-month validity from the intended date of entry into the USA, a completed DS 160 application form, a personalised cover letter that outlines the details of your trip to the US and the USA Visa application fee. You will need to present these documents during your interview at the US consulate, which might be required of you to enter the country.

Other supporting documents you may need include a copy of your bank statement, showing that you have sufficient finances for your trip, verification of your employment from your country of origin, a covering letter or statement from your destination host or from the business you are working for in the US as well as a recent colour photograph which is 2 x 2 inches on a white background. Business cards, salary slips and financial documents may also be useful during your application process.
